Measures of Student Achievement and Success

Our school follows the guidelines set out in the OCDSB Policy and Procedures for Stude Evaluation, available on the Board’s web site. Staff at Arch Street make use of a wide variety of assessment strategies including but not limited to oral and written tests and quizzes, projects, public speaking, dramatic presentations, portfolios, student led conferences, rubrics, assignments and formal assessment tools such as the Early Identification Assessment and PM Benchmarks. Each year our grade 3 and 6 students participate in EQAO assessment of Literacy and Numeracy.

School Improvement Plans and Initiatives

With the support of our parent community, staff are working to further develop our continuous learning plan for Arch St. P.S. with an emphasis on providing strong instructional leadership aimed at improving student results particularly in the areas of mathematics. Over the last two years their professional development work has focused on Number Sense and Numeracy strategies as part of the implementation of a Balanced Math program. Staff are working closely with a school board math coach develop and implement an array of tasks which focus on developing mathematical thinking and communication strategies. To this end, teachers have been meeting and attending workshops to develop and review the best strategies to help students advance their math skills.

The Arch Street P.S. staff is committed to directing the school's activities, resources, an energies to improved student achievement. Teachers continue to be in-serviced. Resources are reviewed and updated regularly. Many programs have been implemented to enrich and support the areas of Numeracy, Literacy and other areas of the Ontario Curriculum.

Some of these include:

• Volunteers supporting Reading development

• Implementation of the Balanced Literacy Program in all grades

• Borrow-a-Book

• Book Fairs and Used Book Sales

• Math Buddies

• Numeracy Initiatives

• Student Initiated Newsletters

• Use of manipulatives

As a school family, we believe that:

School must be a place where all students feel safe, valued and recognized. A positive school climate is observed with clear rules of behavior, an Anti-bullying pledge, instruction of the OCDSB's Community of Character traits and a strong focus on the development of self-discipline and a sense of responsibility.
