Welcome Back 2021

Welcome Back
Posted on 09/08/2021

Dear families,

The school team and I have been busy over the summer getting ready to greet our students on Thursday, September 9th. If you are new to Arch Street PS, we are so pleased to have you join our school community.

Junior kindergarten students will be having intake interviews as scheduled by the homeroom teacher on Thursday September 9, or Friday September 10. Senior kindergarten students who are new to Arch Street PS will also have intake interviews on those days. All kindergarten students will begin their first day of school on Monday, September 13th.

On the first day of school, all staff will be outside to greet our grade 1 to 6 students. Primary students (grades 1 to 3) should go to the primary yard, and junior students (grades 4 to 6) should go to the junior yard. There will be signage on the doors and staff available to help direct you. There will be designated areas for each grade and homeroom teacher in each yard. View this map: Morning Routine

School Supplies

The Four Most Important Things for Students to Bring to School Each Day are:

1. Backpack and lunch

2. Mask (all students, bring daily)

3. Refillable water bottle- LABELLED

4. Extra layers of clothing

School supplies are voluntary. The school will have supplies available for students. Some families prefer to buy them, and if so, this voluntary supply list provides an idea of the kinds of supplies that are used by grade. If a student brings supplies, they should be labelled and stored in a pencil case (or a resealable plastic bag) for personal use. Students will be keeping all supplies at their desk. If you choose to send supplies, keep it to a minimum and replenish throughout the year.

We are working diligently to ensure a safe and pleasant entry for all of our students. In-person elementary school days will be very similar to last year:

  • Daily Screening - screen your child for symptoms every morning before school and ensure they stay home if they have symptoms.

  • Masks are mandatory this year for all students indoors (kindergarten to grade 12) and recommended when outdoors.

  • Hand hygiene - all students and staff will sanitize their hands each time they go in and out of the school and the classroom.

  • Cohorts and Social Distancing - Students will be grouped in cohorts and will be practicing physical distancing inside the school and in the yard.

  • Vaccines - Parents and eligible students are encouraged to follow public health advice and get a vaccine. The Ottawa Public Health vaccine page offers useful information for families. The OCDSB has made vaccines mandatory for all employees. You can learn more here.

  • Visitors and Volunteers - access to school buildings is restricted to students and staff only.

Getting to School Safely – Bus Transportation

The Ottawa Student Transportation Authority (OSTA) is experiencing severe driver shortages and have made many route changes and cancellations. OSTA has posted the full list of cancelled routes according to school here. Families - please check the list and plan for alternative transportation to school.  Note that due to continued uncertainty, OSTA warned that further routes may need to be cancelled. Parents should sign up to the OSTA Parent Portal to receive latest updates, including bus cancellations, and confirm the status of your child’s bus route.

Traffic Safety

With more parents dropping their children off at school, traffic safety is more important than ever. Please consider using the OSTA walking route maps posted on the school website to help children walk to school safely. It’s also important to remind your child about traffic safety when walking or biking to school.

Help Prepare Your Child for Return

It’s been a while since we have been at school together. The start of this school year will be a big transition for all of us. Parents might be interested in these resources to support students return to school produced by School Mental Health Ontario and KidsHelpPhone.

The return to school is an exciting time. To help your child get ready, consider the following:

Talk with your child about returning to school. Focus on the joy of learning, seeing their friends and reconnecting with staff, and building routines;

Practice hand washing;

Practice wearing a mask;

Keep the link to the Ottawa Public Health Self-Assessment Tool in a handy spot so you can access it daily. You can also learn more about COVID-19 testing here.

Learn more in the language you need from these Multilingual Resources from Ottawa Public Health.

Indigo Adopt A School Program

I am excited to announce that Arch Street PS has been adopted by the Indigo Adopt A School Program to help enhance our literacy program. Between September 13 and October 3rd, you can make your donations at Coles Billings Bridge Shopping Center for the Arch Street PS love of reading program. We thank you in advance for your support!

Student Accident Insurance Attachment - Insure My Kids Proposal & Coverage.pdf

Creating a caring and safe environment for our students is our top priority. Unfortunately, despite all reasonable precautions being taken, accidents can still happen. Some injuries may result in medical, dental or other expenses that are not covered by provincial health care or employer group plans. As a parent/guardian, you become responsible for these expenses.

Student accident insurance is available for purchase, on a voluntary basis, through Old Republic Insurance Company of Canada. Parents may apply online at www.insuremykids.com or call 1-800-463-5437.

The OCDSB encourages all parents/guardians to consider purchasing this insurance.  The accident insurance coverage options range from $17.00/year to $33.00/year. This coverage is for the entire calendar year and also applies to accidents that occur outside of school hours.  If you have any questions, please call Binks Insurance Brokers directly at 613-226-1350.

We are looking forward to new adventures in our 2021 school year! Watch for more information from your child’s teacher.

Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions.
